Community Invited to Townhall Meetings To Learn About WCSD Budget
Reno, NV (March 28, 2013) - As part of its continuing commitment to an open dialogue with the community, Washoe County School District (WCSD) leaders have scheduled a series of townhall meetings to discuss District budget challenges and needs. The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will join senior District officials to discuss the general operating and capital funds budget for the coming year.
WCSD is anticipating a potential budget deficit of $32 million for the 2013-2014 school year, although the final amount will depend upon the outcome of the legislative session. During the townhall meetings, staff members will discuss this potential shortfall, as well as the governor's proposed education budget, estimated general fund expenditures, the sequestration of federal grant funds, and other issues that could impact the District budget.
The District is also facing challenges with capital funding. At the townhall meetings, staff members will review the ways in which the 2002 bond rollover funding was used to build new schools and revitalize older schools. When the bond expired in November 2012, the District was left without a way to generate capital funds to repair and maintain more than 100 buildings, including 93 schools. Staff members will discuss the challenges associated with capital project funding, and will share details about Assembly Bill 46, which would generate revenue for WCSD school repairs and maintenance.
"As a District, we are dedicated to keeping the lines of communication open with our community," said WCSD Superintendent Pedro Martinez. "We are facing some serious challenges with our funding-both in our operating budget and in capital project funding-and we are working with our legislators in Carson City to find solutions. This is a great opportunity to update our community on that process and to share information about other issues that affect the budgets for our schools and programs."
Ten public meetings will be held at schools and community centers during the first three weeks of April, giving members of the community an opportunity to learn about the many aspects of the District budget.
Spanish interpreters will be provided at every meeting except the meeting on April 11 at the Boys and Girls Club. Superintendent Martinez will conduct this meeting in Spanish, and interpretation in English will be provided.
