Superintendent Martinez Commends Governor Sandoval
For Making Education a High Priority
Reno, NV (Jan. 17, 2013) - Saying it is clear Gov. Brian Sandoval has made education a top priority, Washoe County School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez is commending the governor's support of students across Nevada following the State of the State address.
"We are grateful for Gov. Sandoval's support for our schools, our students, and our academic goals, but there is still much work to be done." said Martinez. "The fact that the governor has placed a strong emphasis on education represents an encouraging start to a long process of collaboration with the governor, state lawmakers, and our staff as we move forward together to provide the best possible education for our children."
The legislative session is scheduled to last for 120 days, and much can happen in that time as lawmakers work with school districts around the state to consider and pass legislation that affects Nevada's education system. Until bills are passed and the governor signs them into law, the implications of legislative decisions won't be clear, but the District is committed to continuous communication with parents, staff, and the community as the process unfolds in Carson City.
"Over the next few weeks, our staff will be looking closely at the details of the governor's proposed budget to determine its impact on WCSD if it is passed by state lawmakers," Martinez said. "Gov. Sandoval has helped launch conversations at the state level, and we are eager to continue those conversations with our community and our state representatives. We know the pathway to college begins in kindergarten. As we educate Nevada's future workforce, our primary goal is to prepare them well for college and the highly-skilled careers that will benefit our state in the future, and that journey continues every day."
The 77th session of the Nevada State Legislature will convene on Monday, Feb. 4.
